SPEECHLESS

WE SAT AT HER TABLE and ate the dinner she served. The rice was soggy and tasteless. The sauce was mild, but the lamb shared the same attributes as the rice. She entertained us with fables and stories that kept us laughing and could have compensated for the bland food, but we were hungry and had to sip on the wine to quell the pangs that pinched at our bellies. Finally, she excused herself and disappeared into her bedroom. Soon after, I left Gboyega at the table and walked toward her pristine bookshelf; I saw a medical diagnosis lying beside her teaching notes. There was an emphasis on the texture of the food she was to eat to reduce her pain. ‘What is it?’ Gboyega asked as he noticed my raised eyebrows and stiffening posture. I stared at him, unable to speak as she returned to the room.
